A little background on your career in the industry
Started at Richards Beauty College in 1985, working behind the chair for 20 years, and have been an educator for 25 years. For about 10 years I did both.
What made you choose this career?
I love fashion, dressing up, and being a hairstylist let me do it all, wear the trendiest fashion, the hot makeup trend and having the latest haircut, being around like-minded peers, always learning new techniques, and giving people that knowledge as well.
What’s the most valuable thing you have taken away from your education?
Education is never-ending, you can always learn something new.
What is the most important thing you want your students to take away?
To be proud of your chosen career, the possibilities that are available to you, and there is always something new to learn.
What keeps you inspired /motivated?
What keeps me inspired is the students, to show them that this is a fantastic industry to be in and what motivates me is to always keep learning to show students new trends, that excites me, that is my passion, and when students see that passion I hope it will inspire and motivate them in return.
What are some of your biggest achievements?
One of my biggest achievements is when I became the Team Canada WorldSkills Expert in Hairstyling, being able to work and train some very skilled new stylists and helping them to show that off and compete against 32 other countries.
Who has been your biggest inspiration and why?
There have been many people that have shaped my career, all from training me in technical skills to giving me opportunities. I thank them all from the bottom of my heart. They know who they are.
What have been some obstacles that you’ve faced in your career? How have you overcome them?
I am sure there were, just can’t think of anything.
What are your favourite services or area of your career that you enjoy the most?
I love to do vintage-inspired looks, from glamour waves to roller sets
What is the one piece of advice you wish someone would have given you?
That’s a tuff one, start saving money sooner lol
Is there anything else you would like to share /add?
Only to love what you do, and give it 110% nothing less
