Continue on the journey with Hairstyling student Sophia, as she completes Fundamental Haircutting class and moves into Fundamental Colour.

The first week of April at Style Academy stands out as one of my favorites so far. We learned different ways to cut hair, starting with solid form cuts, which were easy and fun. Then we tried layers, which were a bit harder but still manageable. Lastly, we did men’s cuts, where I sadly messed up a fade. Towards the end of the week, we tackled uniform cuts. It was challenging to keep our projections and fingers in the right position, which left us tired. To cheer us up after the hard work, Gena took us for a walk. Overall, it was a week of learning and growth, with each cutting technique teaching us something new.

On the last day of the week, something funny happened. Three of us, including me, mixed up our mannequins without realizing it until we finished cutting the uniform hair. We all laughed at the mistake. Honestly, I’m not sure why none of us stopped to look around, even though we were all confused in the morning. We knew something wasn’t right, but we kept going and did our haircuts anyway.

Adding to the humor, Gena gave us the wrong homework, which made us laugh even more. When she asked us about the chapter, none of us knew the answers to the questions and were so confused. Truly a Friday moment! It was a funny way to end the week, and we were all glad it was finally the weekend!

The art of hair colouring at Style Academy

In the final week of April, we delved into the art of hair coloring at Style Academy. It was exciting to learn about the color wheel and expand our skills through rigorous formula tests. Despite encountering some challenging formulas along the way, I learned how to mix colors to meet clients’ desires and determine their starting color. The formula test wasn’t that bad; all I had to do was find the existing color and make the right formula for the new color a client would want.

Our learning journey didn’t stop there. We learned how to do root touch-ups, add highlights, and create a balayage style using conditioners and foils. It was pretty fun, although we had to do touch-ups, highlights, and balayage at least three times on the mannequin, and the conditioner was a little hard to work with as it was runny. Not only that, but we only got marks for the good ones. It was a great learning experience, and I’m glad they were a little hard on us. We practiced folding foils, ripping foils, and saw where we needed to improve our technique. We also tried different application methods like using brushes, bowls, and bottles, which gave us an opportunity to find out which coloring method and technique we liked best. These lessons gave us a solid grasp of coloring hair before doing real color work.
