The Style Academy Makeup Artistry students and staff recently completed a fun action packed 5 days of training at with makeup FX artist and designer, Emersen Ziffle. Emersen created a fun and informative workshop using his knowledge and experience of working in TV and Film for well over a decade. He customized the agenda based on the needs and interests of the attendees of the workshop, this added to the excitement and student engagement!
The students learned an array of new practical skills that they can add to their tool kit when creating new looks. These new skills include the use of skin Illustrators, clay sculpting, live casting, making transfers, creation of burns using gelatin and the always fun, blood FX!
TRANSFERS
One of the main take aways from the workshop was the creation of molds and transfers using different mediums. Transfers are an essential to every Makeup FX kit. They are essentially temporary 3D tattoos that are used to simulate things such as scars, boils, bullet wounds etc. Emersen taught the students the process of creating transfers right from scratch using everyday (out of kit) and professional materials. Students sculpted and created their own molds which then were filled with a transfer material. Once made, transfers can be stored and quickly applied to the talent (actor, model, client).
SCARS & BURNS
Emersen shared some of his tips and trick and secrets to making realistic burn textures using gelatin. Our students had so much fun watching the demo and experimenting with the medium on themselves to create realistic looking burns.
BLOOD FX
The group dove into the world of Blood FX on the fourth day of the workshop. Emersen taught students how to create realistic blood effects. Students created a “bladder” and each had an opportunity to test them out! They also learned the difference and uses for the different types of commercial stage bloods as well as learned a recipe for artificial blood that students can create at home.
& MUCH MORE!
A special thank you to Emersen for this time he shared with our students. He covered so much content and unlocked the participants creative minds by developing the skills needed to create these special FX looks.
BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER
Our May 2018 Full time students then showcased their new skills following the 5 days of training. They were asked to incorporate all the beauty makeup skills they had learned throughout the semester and use them in conjunction with their makeup FX skills to create a character. This included writing a background story behind each character and bringing that character to life on a model. Check out the amazing work the students did!
